Grayson Perry’s Art Club with Boy George and Johnny Vegas.
Capturing the Stars of Grayson’s Art Club in Bristol
I recently had the real pleasure of photographing Grayson Perry and his wife, Philippa Perry, for the promo shoot of Grayson’s Art Club. This popular show, which airs on Channel 4, has been a huge hit with art lovers and enthusiasts alike. The episode airs this Friday at 8pm, and I’m excited to share a few of my favorite shots from the day.
A Memorable Shoot at Bristol Museum
The shoot took place at the stunning Bristol Museum, a place I’ve always loved for its architecture and atmosphere. This time, the museum was buzzing with even more energy, as it played host to Grayson’s Art Club. Bristol is such a vibrant city, and this event was another reminder of just how happening it is right now. Being a Bristol photographer, it’s always special when I get the opportunity to work on such culturally rich projects here in my home city.
The shoot featured some amazing personalities, including the ever-colourful Boy George, comedian Johnny Vegas, and a group of wonderful artists, including Lesley Woolvine, Debbie Porter, and Paul Weedon and his family. It was an honor to photograph them alongside Grayson and Philippa Perry, capturing moments that will now be used in promoting the show.
Grayson and Philippa Perry: A Creative Power Couple
Grayson Perry, for those who may not know, is one of Britain’s most famous contemporary artists. Known for his unique pottery, tapestries, and, of course, cross-dressing, Grayson is a celebrated figure in the art world, having won the prestigious Turner Prize in 2003. His work often explores themes of identity, gender, and class, making him one of the most distinctive voices in modern British art.
What I love about Grayson is his ability to blend humor and seriousness in his work, making art accessible and engaging for a wide audience. This same approach is evident in Grayson’s Art Club, where he encourages everyday people to create art, providing a platform for artists from all walks of life.
Alongside him is his wife, Philippa Perry, a well-known psychotherapist and author. Philippa brings her own unique perspective to the show, often providing thoughtful insights into the emotional and psychological aspects of creating art. The dynamic between Grayson and Philippa is always a joy to witness, both on-screen and in person. Their creative energy was palpable during the shoot, and it was an absolute pleasure to work with them.
The Power of Art and Community
One of the things I love about Grayson’s Art Club is its ability to bring people together through art, which was especially important during the lockdowns. The show has become a powerful celebration of creativity, providing a space where both established and amateur artists can share their work. It was truly inspiring to meet some of these artists in person during the shoot, and you can really feel the sense of community that Grayson and Philippa have fostered through the show.
Capturing the Moments
For this shoot, I wanted to capture both the personalities and the superb exhibition as a backdrop. Working with such vibrant and charismatic subjects as Grayson, Philippa, and the rest of the group made my job even more enjoyable – every shot felt alive with personality.
Plan Your Visit to Grayson’s Art Club Exhibition
If you’re in Bristol, don’t miss the chance to visit the Grayson’s Art Club exhibition, which will be at Bristol Museum until September 2022. It’s a fantastic opportunity to see some incredible artwork up close and to experience the creative spirit that Grayson and Philippa bring to everything they do. The exhibition showcases not only Grayson’s own work but also the amazing art created by participants from across the UK.
Tune In to Channel 4
And don’t forget to tune into Grayson’s Art Club on Friday, 10th December 2021 at 8pm on Channel 4. It’s going to be a fantastic episode, and I’m thrilled that my photos will be a part of it.
