Factory, Workshop, Progress & Construction: Capturing the Heart of Creation

Being an industrial photographer means I often find myself at factories photographing the incredible processes behind the creation of products, whether it’s food, fabric, or mechanical engineering. Based close to Bristol and Bath, I travel all around the UK to capture industrial photography for a wide range of clients. Each project is a chance to explore the artistry and precision that goes into the manufacturing and construction industries.

Documenting Progress with Industrial Photography

A significant part of my work as an industrial photographer involves progress photography for companies with ongoing projects that need regular documentation. I return to the same location at set intervals to capture the evolution of a project. This could include documenting the construction of a building, the assembly of machinery, or the development of a large-scale infrastructure project.

At the end of the process, I often photograph the finished product after a ‘sparkle clean’ to provide my clients with stunning images that showcase their achievements. Whether it’s a pristine factory floor, an innovative piece of machinery, or a completed architectural marvel, the results are always striking. You can view some examples of this on my Property, Architecture & Interiors page.

Bristol and Bath: Industrial Innovation

Being an Industrial Photographer in Bristol and Bath has provided me with incredible opportunities to document the industrial heritage and modern advancements. Bristol, once a centre for shipbuilding and heavy industry, has now evolved into a hub for aerospace, engineering, and green technology. The city’s iconic Floating Harbour, once the heart of its maritime trade, now houses creative industries alongside remnants of its industrial past.

Photographing in and around Bristol and Bath allows me to draw on this rich industrial history. For instance, I’ve documented factories producing advanced engineering components as well as historic sites like the SS Great Britain, an engineering marvel of its time. Bristol and Bath’s balance of old and new make them an inspiring location for industrial photography.

Experience Across Diverse Industrial Sectors

Throughout my career as an industrial photographer Bristol, Bath and beyond, I have photographed a wide range of industries. These include:

  • Steel and coal workers – Capturing the grit and determination of labour-intensive work.
  • Shipbuilding – Including large-scale cargo ships and historic vessels like the Mary Rose.
  • Heavy machinery – Documenting the intricate engineering of large-scale equipment.
  • Logistics and transportation – Photographing lorries, warehouses, and distribution networks.

Each shoot requires flexibility and focus, as industrial environments are fast-paced and time-sensitive. Workers are often on tight schedules, and I ensure that I work efficiently to capture the necessary shots without disrupting their operations.

Spotlight on the Mary Rose

One of the most memorable projects I’ve undertaken was photographing the famous Mary Rose ship and its artefacts. Spending a day at the Mary Rose visitor centre, I captured the incredible preservation work behind this Tudor warship and its treasures.

The ship itself, raised from the Solent in 1982, is an awe-inspiring sight. Photographing its haunting timber frame required careful lighting to highlight its scale and history. Alongside the ship, I documented a range of artefacts—tools, personal items, and even a musical instrument—each offering a glimpse into life aboard in 1545.

Seeing the dedication of the conservationists was amazing. My aim was to capture not just the objects but the passion and effort that ensure their preservation.

You can read more about this fascinating project and see the photographs on my Mary Rose blog post
