A magical Photo Session with the Cotswold Reindeer Herd
Photographing the Magical Cotswold Reindeer Herd for Candis Magazine
What could possibly be more Christmassy than a REINDEER PHOTO SHOOT? Well, recently I had the absolute pleasure of photographing the enchanting Cotswold Reindeer Herd for an article in Candis Magazine. Grab yourself a mince pie and a spare carrot and read on…
The assignment was to photograph the very friendly owners and hosts of the Cotswold Reindeer Herd with one of their beautiful reindeers, and to get plenty of additional pics of the reindeer in their pen as well. As a Bristol-based photographer, it was a joy to explore this charming location not far from Bristol and Wotton-under-Edge (where my office is). Capturing the serene expressions of these majestic creatures and the passion of their keepers was a real highlight.
I’m excited to share some of the magazine pages (see featured image above) from the article alongside some other photos which didn’t appear in the magazine and some insights into this remarkable herd.
The Cotswold Reindeer Herd: A Slice of Arctic Magic Near Cirencester
Located in the heart of the Cotswolds, the Cotswold Reindeer Herd is a truly magical attraction. Established over two decades ago, the herd is one of the few reindeer farms in the UK. It’s a family-run venture dedicated to preserving these iconic animals and educating the public about their unique characteristics.
Why Reindeer?
Reindeer, or caribou as they’re known in North America, are synonymous with snowy winters and festive cheer. Native to Arctic regions, they are well-adapted to cold climates and thrive in the rolling landscapes of the Cotswolds. The herd provides visitors with a rare opportunity to meet these gentle creatures up close and learn about their history and habitat.
Meet the Herd
The Cotswold Reindeer Herd comprises around 15-20 reindeer, each with its own personality. From the confident leaders to the playful young ones, every reindeer brings something special to the group. During the photo shoot, I was struck by how calm and friendly they were, which certainly makes things easier when trying to photograph them… especially when you compare them to some types of animals which are famously difficult to photograph, such as excitable dogs and cats!
The People Behind the Herd
Behind the scenes the dedicated owners, Andrew and Clare, work tirelessly to ensure the wellbeing of their animals. Their passion is evident in every detail, from the carefully managed grazing pastures to the educational tours they offer. Spending time with them during the photo shoot, I was inspired by their commitment and love for what they do.
Educational and Festive Experiences
The Cotswold Reindeer Herd is open to visitors during the Christmas season and by appointment throughout the year. Guests can enjoy guided tours, feed the reindeer, and learn fascinating facts about their biology and behavior. The herd also participates in festive events, bringing a touch of reindeer magic to local communities.
Reindeer Facts You Might Not Know
1. Unique Adaptations
Reindeer have specialized hooves that change with the seasons, becoming spongier in summer for better grip on soft ground and harder in winter to cut through snow. Their thick fur provides excellent insulation, making them comfortable even in the chilliest weather.
2. Natural Navigators
Reindeer have an incredible sense of direction and are known for their migratory abilities. In the wild, they can travel hundreds of miles to find food, using their acute sense of smell to locate lichen buried beneath the snow.
3. Both Genders Have Antlers
Unlike most deer species, both male and female reindeer grow antlers. Males shed theirs after the mating season, while females keep theirs throughout winter, ensuring they can access food during the harsher months.
A Photographer’s Paradise
For photographers, the Cotswold Reindeer Herd offers a perfect setting. The soft light of the countryside, combined with the graceful movements of the reindeer, creates endless opportunities for stunning shots. Whether it’s capturing a reindeer in mid-stride or a candid moment between the animals and their caretakers, every image tells a story.
During my time there, we focussed on getting the key shot for Candis of Andrew and Clare with one of the reindeer (see featured image above), but there’s a whole load of other opportunities on offer. If you’re a photographer based in Bristol or the surrounding areas, I highly recommend visiting the Cotswold Reindeer Herd for inspiration.
Visiting the Cotswold Reindeer Herd
The herd is an ideal day trip for families, photographers, and anyone seeking a unique experience. Booking in advance is recommended, especially during the busy holiday season.
How to Get There
The Cotswold Reindeer Herd is situated in Amply Crucis, which is a fascinating name in itself (but is close to Cirencester), with easy access from Bristol and the South West. The drive through the picturesque Cotswold countryside is a treat in itself, offering plenty of scenic stops along the way.
Final Thoughts
Photographing the Cotswold Reindeer Herd was a delightful experience, a perfect cross between my day job and an opportunity to learn about these fascinating animals. I’d never heard of this gem of a place before, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to photograph it for Candis Magazine.
If you’re looking for a unique outing or want to add some reindeer charm to your holiday season, the Cotswold Reindeer Herd is a must-visit. For photographers like me, it’s a chance to create memorable images while supporting a local treasure.
