Autumn is here – photographs of the glorious trees at Westonbirt Arboretum.
The Beauty of Westonbirt Arboretum Through Photography
Last year, I had the incredible privilege of being the official photographer for Westonbirt Arboretum, one of the most breathtaking tree collections in the UK. This commission allowed me to immerse myself in the natural beauty of the arboretum, capturing its changing seasons and vibrant activities to support their marketing efforts. Each visit was an unforgettable experience, showcasing the arboretum’s magic through my lens. My name is Paul Groom, I’m a Bristol photographer, working around Bristol, the South West, the Midlands and the UK.
Westonbirt Arboretum, located near Tetbury in Gloucestershire, is not just a haven for nature lovers; it’s a photographer’s dream. With over 15,000 trees from across the globe, the arboretum offers endless opportunities to explore the majesty and diversity of the natural world. Whether you’re a seasoned photographer or just starting out, the arboretum provides the perfect backdrop to experiment with light, texture, and composition.
The Role of Trees in Enhancing Mental Health
Spending time among trees is not only visually inspiring but also deeply restorative for the mind. Research has consistently shown that connecting with nature can reduce stress, improve mood, and enhance overall mental health. At Westonbirt, walking through the towering oaks, vibrant maples, and delicate cherry blossoms feels like stepping into a sanctuary of calm.
Photographing trees amplifies this sense of serenity. As I focused on framing shots of sunlight filtering through golden leaves or capturing the intricate bark patterns on a centuries-old trunk, I found myself completely in the moment. The act of photography encouraged me to slow down, observe, and appreciate the subtleties of nature—a meditative practice in itself.
Capturing the Seasons at Westonbirt Arboretum
One of the highlights of this commission was documenting the arboretum’s transformation across the seasons. Each visit offered unique photographic opportunities:
- Spring: Bursting with fresh greens and pastel blooms, spring at Westonbirt feels alive with renewal. The delicate blossoms of magnolias and cherry trees create soft, dreamy scenes that are perfect for portrait-style shots.
- Summer: Vibrant and lush, summer showcases the arboretum’s full canopy. Golden-hour photography becomes magical as the evening light dances through the leaves, creating dynamic shadows and warm tones.
- Autumn: Perhaps my favourite season to photograph, autumn at Westonbirt is a riot of fiery reds, oranges, and yellows. The Japanese Maple collection is especially stunning, offering an array of textures and colours that photographers can’t resist.
- Winter: A stark yet striking beauty emerges in winter. Bare branches form dramatic silhouettes against pale skies, and frost adds a layer of texture that transforms the familiar into something extraordinary.
My favourite set of photos from the commission came during autumn. The way the light played with the falling leaves, combined with the rich colours of the season, resulted in some of the most evocative images I’ve captured. I’m thrilled that Westonbirt Arboretum has kindly allowed me to share some of these photos with you below.
